		+	The horizontal lines on the western side of the landfill are being installed and the trench for the connecting pipe on the north is being dug, with a bench that elevates up to the active area.

		+	We went to the site today to look at the slopes. We found that the profile drawings from the original contract are clearly stated as being 2-to-1, which means a slope angle of 26.6 degrees. This is a big difference from what it currently is, which is about 1-to-1. or 45 degrees.

		+	I spoke to Ekokem (Markku), and he is to install a bench on a portion of the landfill by the horizontal pipes, to approach the 2-to-1 slope. However, on the slope by the vertical pipes, which are in the process of being covered, Ekokem will simply finish adding clay and compact. Thus, if the covering soil washes away in the rainy season during the Guarantee period (is this the Defects Liability Period of 90 days or another period, for 6 months?), then they will have to fix.

		+	However, to get around this, Markku stated that they are not going to install the entire slope before the rainy season. They will install the entire slope after the rainy season, and then the guarantee period will expire before the rains come again. Thus, we requested that they install the tallest/longest slope before the rainy season to test whether or not it will hold. If it does not hold, then they will have to fix the slope.

	On one of the days in Lalibela we took a seven hour, 20 km mule trip down the butte and across a nearby ridge to see a much older church and palace erected in a cavern on the far slope of the ridge. The miniature Ethiopian mules must be hypoallergenic because I never experienced even a sniffle while western horses have been known to cause me to break out in hives. (The photos of my large frame draped over a diminutive mule are either funny or pathetic depending on your perspective.) The trip provided a more intimate view of pastoral Hebasha as we slowly passed numerous subsistence farms and several small villages. The minimum highland farm appears to consist of a two room house about the size of a small 1950’s New England Cape with a round barn to shelter the cattle, sheep, goats, donkeys and mules. The compound is enclosed with an embrasure woven from eucalyptus poles and branches. Most farms have several large stacks of hay or straw for animal fodder. As we passed each one, young children would scramble from the yards to endlessly shout “HELLO, HELLO, HELLO”. In addition to the livestock the farmers grow grain and vegetables on the fertile if often dry and rocky soils. There is no mechanization. I’ve seen exactly one tractor since I’ve arrived in the country, a relatively new John Deere stored unserviceable in the weeds by the side of the road.
